Creating Career Possibilities For Yourself in 3 Short Steps - Hallie Crawford
Creating Career Possibilities For Yourself in 3 Short Steps About 12 years ago, I visited San Francisco with my boyfriend. One day we decided to ride bikes across the Golden Gate bridge. That bridge is huge, the water underneath it is cold and choppy. The whole image of the bridge inspires awe and can be intimidating too. Plus, it was very windy and chilly that day. The wind was blowing against us. I remember standing there before we started and thinking â" this is big, the bridge is long, the windâs blowing against us, and I donât know whatâs on the other side. This is a little intimidating! Do I really want to do this? And where are we going to end up anyway- whatâs on the other side and is it really worth it? Iâm from Florida so I donât like chilly and windy. Halfway across the bridge we paused for a break, and these thoughts are repeating over and over in my mind â" is this really worth it? Canât I just turn back and have the wind at my back instead? In that moment halfway across the bridge, suspended over turbulent wat ers, I knew I was faced with a decision. Do I push forward, or do I turn around and retreat? Thereâs no harm in going back right? I often think about that moment in my life even today. I especially recall it when working with career transition clients who are facing their futures with so much uncertainty. Right now, thereâs a whole lot of uncertainty with the economy the way it is. As we all know â" unemployment rate is at least 8%? Good news is that you can create possibility and opportunity for yourself despite being laid off in three stepsâ" build a new bridge over this obstacle in your life just as you have with other obstacles you have faced. Step One- Realize Your Job is Not Your Identity. Itâs important to shift your perspective and change what it means to be in career transition because without a changed perspective you wonât move forward at all. The words you use to describe a career transition make a difference! You can say things like, âA space has opened up,â âThere is an opportunity here,â âA door has opened.â These are all different and positive ways to look at it. Attitude is everything. The definition of attitude is: a complex mental state involving beliefs, feelings, and dispositions to act in certain ways. Attitude starts in your mind and affects what action steps you take towards your goal. If you have a defeated attitude to begin with, thatâs what happens in your world. Focus on gratitude- change your mental filter. Instead of thinking, âIâm a victim,â say instead âI have a chance here to recreate my reality.â Choose to become grateful for what you have instead of focusing on wh at you donât have. Step Two- Uncover Your Not-So-Hidden Talents. Define success your way, not based on what others say or what society tells you necessarily. Re-create your reality. Are you using your talents? The talents you want to be using? Are you passionate about your job? These questions allow you to access what your heart knows. Think about what talents you would love to use in a career. What would make you want to jump out of bed in the morning to go to work? If money were no object and you were guaranteed for success, what would you be doing for a job? Nearly ½ of US workers expect to be working at traditional retirement age of 67- thatâs a long time! Make sure you are doing something that you enjoy. Step Three- State What You Want. This step has to do with trusting in the face of the unknown. Being laid off/being in flux is scary and hard for people. Especially with this tough economy, we donât believe thereâs something out there for us. The news tells us there arenât jobs out there, but what if there are tons of opportunities out there? You have to allow them, find them, and seek them out. Tune into whatâs possible. Itâs also important to move past scarcity thinking. This happens too with the tough economy- we think there arenât enough jobs for everyone. Itâs the mentality of someone else wins and I lose. Shift your perspective instead to thereâs enough for everyone. Belief is essential; without belief nothing is possible. We know that athletes who visualize their success see themselves winning. The belief goes to a subconscious level for them and they are more likely to succeed because of it. We can do this too. Define your goal with your career transition. Kn ow what direction youâre going in. Now that your job is gone, this is your chance to redefine yourself. State what you want and believe in it. What should you do after analyzing these three steps? Visualize. Close your eyes for me for a moment and think about this⦠What would your life look like if you re-created your reality? If you could step into it tomorrow? You wake up, ready for the day completely energized, believing in yourself, confident, and a spring in your step. You step outside and thereâs a new reality here waiting to greet you. What 3 things would be different for you? Go from your heart, no thinking or intuition. Relish this for a moment, feel how this new reality feels. Share with someone if you can. Now, take a breath and shift gears. What would it be like to not reach what you just saw? What would be lost if you never gave this new reality a chance to happen? If those 3 things never occurred, how would that feel? What opportunity would be missed? Take Action. So I was halfway across the golden gate bridge, and I thought about what was going to be lost if I didnât cross the bridge. I had the opportunity to turn back, but in the end I knew I didnât want to live with that decision. One of the things that kept me moving forward, not just on the bridge, but also through my own career transition was, âDo I really want to define myself by failure and by having done it?â Crossing that bridge, and my career change were defining moments. Take action to define your own career change. Schedule a free consult with HallieCrawford.com today

Whats at Stake for LGBT Rights in the Workplace Under Trump
Whatâs at Stake for LGBT Rights in the Workplace Under Trump With Donald Trump entering the White House and Republicans in charge of both the House and Senate, what can lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender workers expect? As with issues like health care and immigration, the policies that Trump will actually implement are unclear. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, Trump appeared to dismiss fears about marriage equality being rolled back. âThese cases have gone to the Supreme Court. Itâs settled, and Iâm fine with it,â he said. For example, Trump has promised to nullify all executive orders signed by President Barack Obama, which would presumably include an order that protects LGBT federal workers from discrimination. He has also stated that if Congress passes the First Amendment Defense Actâ"a bill that would allow businesses and health care providers to legally discriminate against gay and transgender Americans for religious reasonsâ"he will sign it. âThatâs a license to discriminate,â said Emily Martin, general counsel and vice president for Workplace Justice at the National Womenâs Law Center. âReligion can be used to justify a lot of ugly things.â Still, she said a lot will depend on who Trump appoints to various agencies. âPersonnel makes a difference,â she said. By that measure, LGBT workers have cause for concern. Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who is running the transition team responsible for filling thousands of positions in the new administration, is openly hostile to LGBT rights. As governor of Indiana, Pence passed a bill similar to the First Amendment Defense Act. And when he was in the House, Pence voted to add an amendment to the Constitution stipulating marriage is solely between a man and a woman. He also supports conversion therapy, treatment meant to persuade gay people to become heterosexual. The official Republican Party platform echoes some of Penceâs positions. It calls for the reversal of marriage equality, states companies should be allowed to âdecline to sell items or services to individuals for activities that go against their religious views,â and calls for the legalization of conversion therapy for minors. North Carolinaâs infamous bathroom bill and other âreligious freedomâ bills that allow discrimination against gay and transgender people have flourished under Republican administrations at the state level. As it stands, sexual orientation is not a protected class under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, meaning people can be legally fired for being gay or transgender in the 28 states that have not passed anti-discrimination laws. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission interprets Title VII to prohibit sexual orientation or gender identity discrimination; however, EEOC decisions are not binding on federal courts, and the Supreme Court has not ruled on this matter, according to On Labor. Martin said it will be up to the private sector to continue to push forward with anti-discrimination policies. The vast majority of Fortune 500 companies prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, according to the Human Rights Campaign. She also pointed to North Carolina, where a controversial bill forbidding transgender people from using public bathrooms that aligned with their gender identities has received major backlash from the business community, with serious economic consequences for the state. âWe definitely have seen a lot of companies taking the lead, saying âwe donât discriminate,'â she said. âIndividual states can and should adopt laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.â

Exploring Different Career Paths In Education - Work It Daily
Exploring Different Career Paths In Education - Work It Daily Educational Career Paths A masterâs degree can be highly beneficial for current teachers looking to advance their careers by continuing their education, as well as for aspiring teachers who want to enter the profession with a competitive edge over other job applicants. There are plenty of degree options available to you if youâre looking to become a teacher, and each one places you on a particular professional trajectory. Check out some of the main kinds of masterâs degrees for teachers and the career paths they will prepare you for, so that you can figure out which one is right for you: Master Of Arts In Teaching A Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a degree for teachers that demonstrates a mastery of the profession and the acquisition of necessary skills and experience to excel at the front of the classroom. If you are looking for hands-on teaching experience and an opportunity to work with students as part of the curriculum, then an MAT may be right for you. An important component of the MAT is the student-teaching experience. This experience places candidates in the classroom so that they can apply what they've learned in a practical setting. MAT curriculum grounds you in pedagogical theory and instructional methods. It also allows you to concentrate in a particular academic discipline that will prepare you to teach a particular subject. There are also MAT programs which offer specialization in particular types of education, such as Early Childhood Education or teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). All in all, you should pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching if you want to work directly with students as a classroom teacher. Master Of Science In Education The Master of Science in Education (M.Ed) is preferable if you are looking to expand your impact on education beyond the classroom and become part of the education system itself. The M.Ed focuses on education in a broader sense and includes aspects that go beyond direct teaching. The M.Ed is divided into three categories that are designed to prepare you for different career paths in education: 1. Curriculum and Instruction: Offers you an in-depth understanding of curriculum development the learning methods of students and lesson designs that cater to the needs of students. This degree prepares teachers for leadership, but can also prepare you for a position teaching other educators in a teacher education program or school of education. You could also work developing curricula for school districts. 2. Counselor Education: What youâd pursue if youâre looking to become a school guidance counselor. An M.Ed in Counselor Education teaches you the traditional elements of a degree in education, while also instructing you in child development and preparing you to look after the welfare of students. 3. Educational Administration: If you want to work as a principal or higher level school administrator in the district. These are the positions ideal for those looking to affect change in the education system through policy and legislation. The coursework for this degree is built around educational law, faculty leadership, managerial skills and community issues. Other Degrees While the Master of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Science in Education are the most common degrees to prepare you for a career in education, there are certain schools that offer variants of these degrees. Sometimes you may also see an advanced teaching degree with another component, such as a Master of Arts in Teaching with Learning Technology. In this case, you would receive the same preparation as an MAT, but with added emphasis on technology and education, which can prepare you for a job as a technology instructor or even as a schoolâs technology supervisor. Before choosing any masterâs program, you should have an idea of the career in education you want to pursue. Teaching is just one way you can change the lives of students, and these degrees and focuses can open the door to many different career paths in education. Remember also that while these degrees can prepare you, they alone do not satisfy all the requirements for becoming a teacher. All public school teachers must be certified to teach in their state. Some programs offer teacher certification as part of the degree, but you may need to pursue your teaching certificate through another agency. Know what your desired program offers. You should also know what the requirements are in your state to become a teacher and what you ultimately hope to accomplish. Student Creates App to Sell Textbooks
Student Creates App to Sell Textbooks Student Creates App to Sell TextbooksDorm room startups, new app developments, and entrepreneurs in college are no new thing, but its always exciting to see the success stories. We had the opportunity to interview Brian Adams, an Entrepreneurial Communications major and Senior at Ohio University, who founded the app MyCampus. MyCampus is an app that allows students to communicate with one aleidher about textbooks that they want to buy or sell. They can use the app to contact one another, send payments, and get their textbooks without having todivulge any personal information. Its a safe way for students to get rid of old textbooks and make some money. Future plans for app include to expand to a shipping method as well, so students are not limited to their own campuses. What inspired him?Brian welches inspired to create the MyCampus app after buying and selling items on Craigslist during his early college years. He wanted to create an app that coul d help students buy textbooks by providing a safe service where students could reach out to others on campus. He began with the idea and spent about 10 months going over it and getting feedback so he could tailor it to students needs. Then through an accelerator program he moved forward with the app, with the help of seed funding. With the help of the accelerator he was able to get guidance and feedback for his app, as well as assistance creating a business model. He outsourced development, and with the help of beta testers and reliable feedback, worked on an interface that is user friendly and something students want to use. In 2012, he had 14,000 visitors from his college alone. What was the most difficult part?Brians journey to create the app came with struggles, which were mostly from the technical standpoint of application development. His main suggestion for creating a successful app is feedback, since he heavily relied on it from beta testers and users, in order to make improv ements. How did he get the word out?Through channels like Twitter, Facebook, and other social media, Brian partnered with popular accounts and pages to let him advertise his app, which promoted the app to a wider audience. Since the majority of the traffic he initially received for the app was from Apple iOS, the app will first be release for iPhones, but he intends to make it available on the menschenhnlicher roboter platform as well. The app will officially launch in January for Ohio University and Ohio State.
